When thinking about your career path, it’s not always just about money. There are a number of other factors that come into play when weighing a new position or determining the direction for your professional life. Companies are fighting for the top talent in the industry and now could be the right time for you to make a strategic move. Fifteen years ago when I was contemplating how to find my career, I considered several key issues which led me to my current role as Executive Senior Partner in the Sales & Marketing Division at Lucas Group.
Is the potential new opportunity better than where I am currently? Whether it’s compensation, more responsibility or the role better aligns with your skill set, consider whether or not changing careers or career paths is beneficial for you. Is the culture better? Is the commute better? Think about what you’re missing with your current employer and whether or not you would gain that in a new position.
Does the position allow for advancement, and/or would I be able to advance quicker than in my current role? Sometimes changing companies can fast track your career path. If you’ve been with the same organization for a number of years, it’s likely that making a move can improve your financial situation as well as help you climb the corporate ladder faster than staying where you have been. Not all companies are managing career paths well, and if you’re not advancing how you should be, it may be time to make a move.
