While it can be easy to “go with the flow” when things are going well, certain situations and scenarios force managers to adjust their management style in order for the team to succeed. As a leader, you need to be able to recognize business demands and clamp down when needed to wade through what could be difficult times.
When should you consider tightening the management gap?
Certain economic changes or market fluctuations in your industry can ignite a fire to adjust how you manage your team. For instance, the changes in many manufacturing sectors have impacted a number of industries, requiring leaders to shift management styles in order to thrive. Underperforming employees or slumped sales or revenue numbers can also be scenarios in which you want to evaluate your management style and take a more aggressive approach to getting the team back on track. Recognizing when not to let off the gas pedal is a valuable trait for any manager and can be a game changer when times get tough.
How do you reach a solution?
You need to be firm and resolute in your beliefs and know what works best for your team. Make decisions based on the best interests of each individual, the team as a whole and the overall company. If you have the trust of your employees behind you and have been a consistent leader, you can maintain your integrity and principle values while subtly changing how you manage your team when necessary. In doing so, you’ll be able to weather the temporary storm and come out stronger than before.
